An Avon Victorian Washstand

I wanted to share this new acquisition, just because I'm quite chuffed with it.

It's a bottle of bubble bath in the form of a Victorian washstand, produced by Avon in, I understand, the 1970s.

It's made up of three parts: a painted glass cupboard, a plastic 'marble' top and a plastic jug and basin, the latter moulded as a single piece.

I'm not a big fan of plastic in my dolls' houses, but I do like something a bit different, so I'm happy to make an exception for this. I also think it doesn't look particularly plastic at first glance, apart, maybe, from the jug and basin when viewed from above.

This is the base, with AVON and what, in better light, looks like a number five moulded into the glass.

I haven't been able to find any concrete evidence of when the bottle dates from, only online sellers' descriptions placing it in the 1970s. One seller in particular gives a date of 1974/75 – perhaps they have some evidence for this, I don't know. But if that date is right, then the bottle is just over fifty years old and I would have been about seven or eight when it appeared in the catalogues. I wonder why no one bought me one – I would have much preferred it to soap on a rope and sandalwood bath salts!

Amazingly, it still has its contents, which have a 'not-too-bad' scent, although I certainly wouldn't be able to identify it. I've seen some examples online with their original boxes, but as mine will live in a dolls' house, the box is no miss to me.

And here it is in my Lines Bros. Ltd (Tri-ang) DH/10, where it's nicely to scale with the Tiny Toy bathroom suite and Enna baby-changing set I have in there.

There's just something I like about knowing that it has a hidden secret...

Until next time,
Zoe
